WASHINGTON, Dec. 20, 2023 — The pharmaceutical industry is warning consumers and physicians that Levitra, its popular erectile dysfunction drug, may be available without a prescription, as it increases competition for erectile dysfunction treatment.
The warning was issued late last year by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates the drugs.
In a letter to the FDA, the company said that Levitra and other erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are now available without a prescription, regardless of their formulary status.
“This increases competition for erectile dysfunction medications,” said Richard Evans, Ph. D., a spokesman for the FDA.
The FDA also issued a statement warning consumers and physicians that Levitra may not be a good choice for patients who may have erectile dysfunction. However, the company did not identify any specific complaints about Levitra, or any potential side effects, as Levitra is not approved for the treatment of ED.
“The FDA will continue to monitor our patients and ensure that Levitra is safe for use,” Evans said.
Consumers who have used Levitra or similar drugs to treat their ED are also advised not to take this drug, which is meant to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The FDA recommends patients take a maximum of two pills a day before sexual activity, and that patients use a drug that contains a similar ingredient, or one that can be purchased with a prescription.
Levitra, Cialis and Viagra are marketed by Eli Lilly, the company that makes Levitra. Levitra was approved by the FDA in 2003 and is now on the market.
